I was recently in a 6-week virtual container for writing accountability, hosted by
. A few of us are sticking together to write, on Wednesdays.OK but first, a note about what has been an exercise in doing something uncomfortable: I’m fundraising for &Mother’s Changemakers grant, and thanks to many of you I’m about 60 percent of the way to my goal of $2,000. If you feel inclined to support their mission, and have anywhere from $1+ to contribute, I’m SO grateful. If you can’t, I get that , too.
Part of this experience is getting to run the United Airlines NYC Half marathon with the &Mother fundraising team and program coordinators, this weekend in NYC. I’m pumped to run my first race in NYC—over a bridge, through a few boroughs, ending in Central Park 🤩. So, if I can make it through this week (see below), I’ll catch you on the other side of 13.1 miles.
“How’s your training going?”
You might wonder, since I’m running a half-marathon in a few days. And to that I would say, well, I’ve run a half-marathon on less training, so I feel (maybe over) confident that it will probably be fine! I’ve been chatting about this training and upcoming race with my
co-founder, on our podcast, so if you’re curious (I always am! I get it!), tune in here (or here). My last two long runs have been marked “Skipped” in my VDot log, which could be something I feel anxious about or, as Alexis reframed for me, could be considered a “Long Taper”, so we’re going with that one. More on why, below.
I know it may read as a bit callous or naive or just plain dumb to go into a half-marathon feeling a little bit under-trained, but my body knows how to run half-marathons. (I would never do this for a marathon.) And, as both a coach and a long-time long-distance runner, I’d much rather land on the side of “under” trained than over trained.
Oh, yes! I started coaching again! If you’re curious/interested, start here.
“How’s your March going?”
Listen, it’s 60 degrees outside today and I saw fully bloomed daffodils on my way home from the coffee shop this morning. I can see the end of our first Michigan winter on the calendar, less than one week from today. I feel so fkn delighted by this!
On the other hand, our 2 year old has dozen of little red bumps and has been home from daycare for the second week in a row with a different illness (HFM! WHEW!). We have hardly slept at all the past two nights, which seems to be when his fatigue and symptoms combine to create the perfect storm of toddler meltdowns. The week before that our Kindergartener was home for a few days with a fever, on the heels of their “mid-winter school break” , which is a thing? I hope that someday their immune systems are stronger because of all of this, but for now, the weeds are WEEDING.
How about them hobbies?
I’m reading Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow and feel weirdly into a novel about gaming, a world I know very little about even though I grew up with both the classic Nintendo, the one that came after that, a Sega Genesis, etc.
I’m realizing I have a sub-interest in finance content, after sharing with a new friend the handful of “money podcasts” I listen to. (My now-long-time favorite: Brown Ambition, and Mind Money Balance by local-to-Ann-Arbor money therapist that I’ve befriended thanks to some Google searching last summer, Lindsay Bryan-Podvin.)
I’m loving the now-sunny after school hours in which we hang out in the backyard and “play” soccer. It’s a much lower injury risk for 37-year-old-me than playing in an adult league, and our kids love it.
I’m making a long list of local Run clubs/groups, and programs (e.g. highschool and collegiate) both for personal and work (Lane 9) reasons.
